How to apply
In order to apply for our 2011 Associate program, applicants must submit an online application via this website. The deadline for our second round of recruitment is Wednesday 2 June 2010.
The Teach For Australia selection process is outlined below.
Step 1: Online application
The online application requires personal and academic information, along with answers to several questions regarding your motivations and experience. Please allow approximately 1.5 hours to complete the application. Applicants are able to commence their application, save information and return to complete the form at a later date.
Please note that the online application system will automatically log out after a period of inactivity, so remember to regularly save your responses while completing the form.
The mandatory short response questions are:
1. Please describe why you would like to participate in this program, why you would be suitable and what you hope to accomplish as a Teach For Australia Associate (Max 300 words)
2. Please describe a situation where you encountered a serious obstacle to success in your academic, professional or extra-curricular activities. Your answer should briefly describe the nature of the goal and the obstacle and describe specifically what you did to respond to the obstacle(s). You may describe more than one approach if relevant. Please choose a situation within the last four years. (Max 300 words)
3. Please describe your two most substantive leadership experiences. For each experience, you should briefly describe the objective and size of the project/team/organisation involved, the nature of your role, and why each experience is significant to you. (Max 300 words)
Please note that one of the competencies we assess is Communication and Influencing which includes the written form, so remember to ensure that your application is written using correct spelling and grammar.
Candidates will be informed of the outcome of their application within two weeks of the application closing date.
Step 2: Telephone Interview
If you are successful at the application stage, you may be invited to participate in a 20-minute telephone interview with a Teach For Australia staff member. This behavioural interview will further explore your background and experiences, along with your motivations for applying to Teach For Australia. The telephone interview will be conducted at a mutually convenient time, usually within two weeks of the application closing date.
We will endeavour to inform you of the outcome of your telephone interview within one week.
Step 3: Selection Day
If you are invited to attend a Selection Day, you will be required to attend in person. To help you prepare, we will provide you with additional information about how best to succeed on the day.
The Teach For Australia Selection Day has been designed in a way that allows all candidates to demonstrate their strengths in a professional yet relaxed environment. Over the course of the day, each candidate will complete two behavioural interviews, a group activity, a sample teaching lesson, and a problem solving test. You'll also have the opportunity to learn more about Teach For Australia and our vision while interacting with a variety of people within our organisation.
Offer and beyond
If you are successful at the Selection Day, you will be made an offer to become an Associate with Teach For Australia. If you are still studying, your offer will be conditional upon the successful completion of your undergraduate degree.
Offers are also conditional upon you being granted Permission to Teach by the relevant certifying body in the state of your placement school. This will involve a National Criminal History Record Check and may involve an English language test for applicants whose tertiary study was completed in a non-English speaking country. Teach For Australia will coordinate this approval process for you.
Training commences with an Initial Intensive at the end of November each year and concludes towards the end of January. Teach For Australia Associates join their schools at the beginning of the school year, usually at the end of January.
