Introducing Lauren Smith, VIC Recruitment Manager, in her own words:

I originate from the north of England, where I struck lucky in the state school postcode lottery.

I lived within the catchment area of one of the best state schools in the area: I had subject specialists teaching me English, Maths and Science. I worked hard and flourished under their teaching.

My experience at school carved my passage to one of the best universities in the country where I studied a Bachelor degree in Mathematics and Sports Science. It was there that I was introduced to Teach First, one of Teach For Australia’s partners in the Teach For All global network.

Apart from education, my passions are sport, travel and trying to make everything as efficient as possible.

Why do you think this work is so important?

I taught at an inner city school with Teach First for three years and I was completely blown away by what I experienced. Students were entering Year 11 and unable to read simple sentences, complete their six times tables or work out if they were given the correct change. On the opposite end of the scale, there were students who wanted to take specialist maths courses but couldn’t because they wasn’t a teacher with the knowledge to take the class. Their education didn’t provide them with the skills they needed to succeed in the adult world and to choose the path they wanted to take.

The Leadership Development Program gives you the skills, regardless of where you come from or where your career is taking you, to tackle the corrosive issue of educational disadvantage. This country needs leaders across all sectors to work towards a solution and during the two years you become equipped to do so.

What is your top tip for people interested in applying to Teach For Australia?

This is a unique opportunity to develop yourself, the students in front you and to become a change maker. However, the uniqueness of the Leadership Development Program also means that it is unlike many other opportunities out there. My big tip would be to read the website back to front and then get in touch. We can chat over the phone or grab a coffee. That way you can ensure you are putting your best foot forward in the application process and I can help you best prepare yourself for an incredible journey.

How can people get in touch with you?

If you want to take a path less travelled where you can make a great and much-needed impact, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Shoot me through an email ( or phone (0386404512) and we can arrange a face to face chat, whether in person or using Skype!
