Introducing Sophie D’Ambra, NSW Recruitment Manager, in her own words:

Hi my name is Sophie and I am originally from Sydney and moved to Melbourne in 2014 to complete the Teach For Australia Leadership Development Program. Access to quality education was always a right of mine and it wasn’t until I completed the Teach For Australia Leadership Program that I realised it is not a universal right for all children in Australia.

A veil of ignorance was lifted and I began to better understand the complex and prevalent problem of educational disadvantage. I also learnt from and admired the resilience my students demonstrated by managing multiple responsibilities and remain engaged in school.

Why do you think this work is so important?

During my time as an Associate and Alumna of the Program, I have observed the powerful impact a caring and effective teacher can have on the life trajectory of a vulnerable student. Additionally, the work of TFA provides vulnerable young people with a pathway to choose a life that is meaningful to them. This work is achieved by improving the literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills of students and empowering them to make long term financial, consumer and personal decisions that are in their best interest.
