As we reach the close of yet another remarkable year, I’m filled with immense gratitude for the tremendous value we’ve added to the education sector and the impact we’ve had on student outcomes. Throughout every milestone and challenge this year, we’ve never lost sight of one of our core values, to always #ServeTheStudent.
This year’s success is a testament to our incredible staff, supporters and partners, and Alumni, and Associates.
Celebrating 15 years of Teach For Australia
To mark our 15th anniversary, we travelled to Canberra in August to hold a special cocktail event at Parliament House. The event brought together our teachers, education leaders, and students from our partner schools, to highlight to federal parliamentarians the positive impact Teach For Australia continues to make.
The celebrations carried on in November, with a reception at Government House, hosted by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria. The event paid tribute to our humble beginnings, first taking root in Victoria and then our subsequent expansion across the country, placing over 1600 high-calibre teachers in schools where they are needed most.
Driving innovation
In September, we were thrilled to be selected by the Federal Government for funding under the High Achieving Teachers Program (HAT) pilot expansion. The renewed funding has enabled us to launch an innovative undergraduate teaching pathway in 2025 in partnership with Charles Darwin University, drawing on our 15 years of insight and experience. This funding has also enabled us to extend our award-winning postgraduate Leadership Development Program (LDP) with funding for an additional 400 places over Cohorts 2026 and 2027.
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we announced further refinements to the LDP in 2026. These changes aim to reduce barriers for career changes by offering part time employment, training and study options, supporting those balancing caring responsibilities and financial obligations.
Expanding the high-calibre teacher workforce
Almost 160 new teachers entered the teaching workforce in areas experiencing disadvantage this year, as part of the LDP.
Among this year’s new teachers, over 50 per cent switched to teaching from other careers or professional backgrounds, while nearly half were recent graduates.
Over 40 per cent are teaching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects, aligning with Teach For Australia’s ongoing focus to address the high demand for qualified STEM educators.
Cohort 2025 are currently finishing their National Initial Intensive – where they have begun their Master of Teaching units and built foundational skills and knowledge before, they step into classrooms in Term 1 next year.
Congratulations to all our newest Associates and Alumni! We’re looking forward to seeing the impact you’ll make on your students, schools and the broader education system.
Nurturing the leadership pipeline in rural, regional and remote schools
Forty-four teachers from outer regional, rural and remote schools across the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland participated in our Future Leaders Program this year, which is designed for aspiring school leaders.
In a survey of Cohort 2023, 91 per cent of FLP Alumni reported seeing development in their overall leadership abilities since completing the program, while 96 per cent would recommend the program to other aspiring leaders.
More than 50 per cent of program participants have also been promoted to positions of leadership or higher responsibility within a year of completing the program.
Congratulations to the 2024 Cohort of the Future Leaders Program on your recent graduation!
Expanding our reach and impact
Teach For Australia’s 2024 Impact Report highlights the significant contribution Teach For Australia has made towards advancing educational equity over 15 years.
With bipartisan support from Commonwealth, state and territory governments, we have supported more than 1800+ new and developing teachers in almost 300 partner schools across seven states and territories.
Looking ahead to 2030, we aim to reach two million students through the growth of our flagship program, provide greater support for existing teachers and leaders, and support 4,000 teachers through our offerings.
Together, we make a difference
To continue to innovate and grow our impact, we expanded our partnership with Toyota Community Trust, which has committed nearly $1m in funding over the next three years.
After years of STEM support for outer western Melbourne communities, the Toyota Community Trust will now bolster our teacher development programs empowering the next generation of innovators nationwide.
We were also delighted to be chosen as one of two recipients of Parliament House’s Giving Tree Program this year. We were selected alongside Murrup, an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that partners with remote communities to support children, young people, and their families.
The Giving Tree Program, launched on 20 November, is still accepting donations.
Donate today to help every child get the education they deserve this Christmas.
We’ve been delighted to work with several new and returning philanthropy partners this year – including the Hansen Little Foundation. Their valued support, and that of all our supporters and donors, has helped deliver vital initiatives right across the country, making a real difference for students.
Thank you to our supportive community and philanthropic partners for your generosity and commitment to educational equity for all young people.
TFA Board changes
We were pleased to welcome two new Board members. Kirsten Andrews, Vice President of External Engagement at the University of Sydney, and David Williams, Founder and Principal of Clansadale Consulting. Their skillsets – paired with those of the existing board members – continue to strengthen Teach For Australia’s position as one of Australia’s leading organisations for advancing educational inequity.
We also thanked and farewelled Ben Jensen, Founder of Learning First, for his many years of service on the Board.
Finally…
As I prepare to transition out of my role as CEO by mid-next year, with search for my successor underway, I’m filled with the utmost confidence in the wonderful future of Teach For Australia. Our recent success in renewing base federal funding provides us with a robust foundation to continue to advance educational equity across Australia.
I want to express my deep appreciation to our community and all those who support our work. We cannot do this work alone, and together we will always #gettheretogether
From everyone at TFA, we wish you a safe and joyful festive season and we look forward to achieving new milestones together in the new year!
Best Wishes,
Melodie Potts Rosevear OAM
