Teach For Australia (TFA) welcomes today’s announcement from the NSW Government that next week’s State Budget will include funding to design a pathway program to encourage mid-career workers to move into teaching.
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Education Minister Sarah Mitchell have confirmed the NSW Government will partner with Teach For Australia to design this program.
The NSW Government is seeking a pathway to encourage high-performing professionals to move into the classroom, with the focus on filling gaps in science, maths and technology and applied sciences and roles at rural and remote schools.
“We welcome this approach by the Berejiklian Government for TFA to work collaboratively with the Department and other key voices in public education in NSW to help design a tailored model to attract mid-career workers into the classroom,” CEO Melodie Potts Rosevear said.
“TFA is experienced in recruiting talented career-changers who go on to be outstanding classroom leaders and subject specialists in schools that serve regional and remote areas and low socio-economic communities.
“We know teachers have the most powerful impact on students’ learning but not every school can secure the subject specialists or school leaders they need, and that’s what TFA’s recruitment and leadership programs have worked to address over the last decade.
“We also know high-performers who enter teaching as a second career bring unique skills, experiences and perspectives which are valuable in the classroom, and valued by principals and staff room colleagues.
“There are many people in NSW who, like Teach For Australia, care deeply about ensuring students have great teachers and we are committed to sharing what TFA has learned and working with them to design a program that meets NSW’s specific needs.
“Several reports confirm areas of teacher shortage NSW must address in order to ensure every child, no matter where they live, has the great teachers they deserve and this is an opportunity for us all to come together and tackle this educational inequity.”
TFA developed Australia’s original employment-based pathway for teaching, the Leadership Development Program, and has also developed and implemented professional development programs for mid-career teachers on a pathway to school leadership.
For 11 years, TFA has worked exclusively with schools which serve low socioeconomic communities, supporting them to improve student and school outcomes.
